Getting a little wine nerd on it.........

26th August, 2009

Today we're going to get a little 'wine nerd' about Hollywood, while we're talking museum releases and the 2001 Frankland Estate 'Olmo's Reward'.

I just love when a winery does all the hard work for me when it comes to ageing wines until they're at their absolute peak. It prevents my impetuous nature getting the better of my cellar after maybe one too many vinos with my mates. I'm sure you'll have been there too.

Well, there's no threat of prematurely ejecting the 2001 Olmo's from your cellar because its now at its prime. At 8 years of age, it is really hitting it's straps. It's got that lovely aged feel.... kinda like a tooty home library of a well heeled aristocrat - lots of chesterfield leather, strips of polished oak and memories of a fine cigar.

Olmo's is a Bordeaux type blend (St.- Emilion to be more precise) that is predominately Cabernet Franc and Merlot.  Without doubt, an elegant and classy wine that should not be missed.

As a side, Cabernet Franc is one of the parent grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon which was derived from crossing Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, hence the name Cabernet Sauvignon.

The most famous wine made in this style is Chateau Cheval Blanc which sells for up to $3,000 a bottle - for those who remember the movie 'Sideways', it was the treasured wine the main character (can't remember his name) had squirreled away in his cupboard for years but ends up drinking it at the end of the flick in a paper cup at a takeaway joint!

And to get all wine nerd about it...... for a man who 'wouldn't drink F***ing Merlot' (the big line in the movie), it's a little bit 'Hollywood' that his most treasured wine was a Merlot blend.

You can get the fabulous Olmo's that usually has a RRP of $55 alongside the impressive Isolation Ridge Shiraz and Oliver's Temp in our straight red ($179) or mixed half-dozen packs ($159).

Click here to check them out.

And if you're stuck with what to get Dad for Father's Day next weekend..... buy him a Secret Vines Pack or a gift voucher online and we'll deliver right to his door.

Happy Drinking !

Tim
