Joe Grilli
Portrait of Joe Grilli
Joe is an Australian wine and food icon and someone we look up to with the highest regard.
After graduating dux of Australia’s premier winemaking school Roseworthy in 1979, Joe went on to start Primo Estate with his family at age 20 in 1979 and the JOSEPH label with wife Dina in 1988.
Besides being one of the nicest guys on the planet, Joe’s made many great Australian wines. He also makes undoubtedly Australia’s best olive oil. And just in case that’s not enough, JG also makes wine under his Primo & Co. Label out of two of his favourite Italian regions, Tuscany and Veneto.
It’s hard to define the bredth of impact that Joe has had on the Australian wine scene, but to us, it’s his consistent ability to challenge the status quo – he has redefined the genre that is savoury, food friendly Australian wine.
Look out for Joe’s Italian recommendations in particular - the only Italian recommendation of his we ever ignored was to back Italy in the Football (soccer) World Cup. Why didn’t someone tell the referee that’s not a trip in Australia - that’s what we call courting an opponent!
