2008 Paxton Thomas Block Chardonnay
This Chard was probably the biggest surprise out of all the wines we tasted last month. The Paxton clan are definitely marching in the right direction at the moment and this is another one stepping to the right beat. Thomas Block is a single vineyard that's currently in the midst of its full transition to biodynamic viticulture.
Some wild yeasts, plenty of good oak and low yields have all combined to deliver great breadth of flavour in this wine. Serious flavour that only Chardonnay can deliver - yet there's some finesse and tightness which will make you go back for more. It's certainly not one of those ‘only drink with food' chard's - I'd happily slurp this peaches and cream number any old winter afternoon.
