2009 Gemtree Vineyards 'Moonstone' Savignin

The Savagnin grape stumbled into Australian vineyards by mistake. It happened because of a ‘woopsee' from the viticulture arm of the CSIRO who imported cuttings of what they believed were the exceedingly fashionable Albarino grape from Spain. But what they actually imported and distributed around the country was a virtually unknown grape from Jura in France - Savagnin.  Wrong grape, wrong country.

No use crying over spilt milk though, the vines are in the ground and they make a good dry white when their toes are in local soil.

What I love about Gemtree's Savagnin is that they've let the cards fall where they may by letting this grape variety speak for itself.  The Moonstone is grown on a biodynamic regime and no yeasts, acids, boosters or other additives were used in the fermentation.  I reckon this is the future - wines that are left alone so they are a true representation of the vineyard where they were born.

The 2009 Savignin has excellent texture that unfolds revealing soft and creamy apple, pear and citrus characters - this is an excellent wine!
